Growbags are an essential piece of kit for your garden. Here is how to use them effectively
First roll the growbag on the ground to break up the compost inside and disperse any large clods. This will enable the tomato roots to penetrate the entire bag
Take three large pots about 20cm (8in) in diameter and remove the bases with a hacksaw to allow the roots of your tomatoes to break out into the growbag compost
Sit the pots on top of the bag and, holding each one firmly in place, cut around the base with a knife. A standard growbag should hold around three pots like this
Remove the polythene from beneath the pots, push the bases into the compost and put some extra compost into the bottom of the pots to raise up the rootballs
Remove the plants from their original pots – the roots should be well established by now. Put the rootball into the new pot and fill around it with compost
Firm the compost around the rootballs and water the plants in well. Tie the tomatoes to supports where required. Bamboo canes or string work well for vine tomatoes
