Waste recycling in Peterborough

Sometimes we need to get rid of something that can’t be put into the wheelie bin – a sofa for example! Did you know that there are a number of ways you can dispose of non-standard waste?

Household Recycling Centre
The Household Recycling Centre on Welland  Road, Dogsthorpe is open to members of the  public to dispose of their household waste so  that as much as possible can be recycled. Almost  anything can be recycled, from small appliances  such as toasters, to larger items such as fridges  and freezers. The list of items you can bring  along is extensive and includes waste such as  used engine oil, paint, rubble and even old  fluorescent tubes!  Waste is accepted at the site manager’s  discretion, but for a full list of what is accepted  please visit the website, detailed below. Please  be aware that if you are using a van or trailer to  transport your waste you will need to apply for  a permit. The centre occasionally has to close at  short notice due to adverse weather such as snow.

WEEE Re-Use Facility
Short for ‘Waste Electrical and Electronic  Equipment’, the WEEE Re-Use facility in  Fengate works to reprocess and recondition  electrical goods for recycling and resale into the  community. You can take any white goods, big  and small, as well as items such as TVs, hoovers  and lamps. Engineers will then work to fix these  items so that they can be sold by local charities  and community groups to raise much-needed  funds. Some fixed electronic items are also made  available to people on low incomes or benefits.

Arrange a collection
If you haven’t got the time or means to make a  trip to either the Household Recycling Centre or  the WEEE Re-Use Facility, the council also offers  a collection service through its waste partner  Amey.  Small items may be collected for free. These  are donated to local charity Sense, which  supports people who are deafblind, have sensory  impairments or complex needs. Suitable items  for donation include clothes and various textiles  such as bed linen or towels; toys, book and CDs,  plus smaller household objects like paintings; and  small electrical items, including kettles, radios,  hair dryers and so on.  For bulkier waste items, there is a charge of  £23.50 per collection. This is a one-off charger  and is not per item. Everything from beds  to cookers can be collected and you can rest  reassured that as much of the material will be  recycled as possible. Some items are quoted on an  individual basis – full details are on the website.
