The Arts Society Peterborough: Germany’s post-WWII Culture of Memorials and Counter Memorials
This lecture, by Angela Findlay looks at commemoration and Germany, which are highly topical during the current anniversaries of the two World Wars. However, relatively little is known about Germany’s complex post-WWII process of remembrance, which resulted in the fascinating counter memorial movement from the 1980s onwards.
Germany’s very specific situation rendered all traditional concepts of memorials irrelevant and inappropriate. So, German artists looked to create art forms that would respond to questions of apology and atonement for their victims.
