The career of Al Capone, the most famous of the Chicago gangsters, was the product of Prohibition together with the American political system from which it arose. The so-called ‘Noble Experiment’, sought to rid the United States of alcohol between 1920 and 1933. What combination of factors led to the introduction of Prohibition and why did it fail? Are there lessons to be learned today?
