Step aboard the ghost train
A real ghost train, with real ghosts! Well, not quite, but Nene Valley Railway are offering the next best thing: Thomas the Tank Engine and his Halloween train, filled with Halloween activities and characters, ideal for little ones who want to join in the seasonal fun without getting too scared. Fancy dress is optional, but prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed adult and child. No pressure, then…

Drive in… to terror!
Drive-ins have, historically, always been something enjoyed exclusively by Americans, with their huge cars sporting glossy chrome tail fins, and their baseball jackets and their beautiful teeth; while we had to put up with damp flea-pits with broken seats and stale popcorn… But not any more! Thanks to Peterborough Garden Park, you can enjoy the full-blown romance of the drive-in experience without having to go all the way to America! Choose from six scary films this Halloween, three family-friendly and three for the grown ups.

Could this be a case for Sherlock Bones?
Combining sleuthing and spectres with great aplomb this coming half term, Peterborough Museum are offering the chance for kids and parents to solve the mystery of a spooky break-in at the city’s most haunted building. Will the culprit turn out to be… not of this world? Or could it be someone much closer to home? There’s no need to book – just drop in.

Down on the farm of horror
Do you like witches? Do you like cottages? Then you will love the witch’s cottage (actually the watermill) at Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre this Halloween! The witches will be hanging out at the watermill as part of the regular tractor ride, and attempting to lure unsuspecting passers by into their lair for tea… On 26, 27 and 31 October, the tractor rides go up a gear (not literally) for an altogether more scary experience: get dropped off by the tractor at the Enchanted Woods, in the dark, and find your way back on foot! (Recommended age: eight and over.)

Crafty and creepy
Don’t spend pounds at the supermarket on Halloween decorations, get down to John Clare Cottage with the kids and make some yourself! It will be far more satisfying and the results will be, dare we suggest, much better. Activities include making a mask (the more gruesome the better) and a dangly skeleton to hang in your window. Suitable for children seven – 12 years.

Hunt the pumpkin
Something of a relief after all the gore, ghouls and ghastliness of Halloween: a walk through the crispy leaves and general gorgeousness of Burghley House’s Sculpture Garden, looking for hidden pumpkins in order to claim a tasty treat at the end. Lovely!

Do the Time Warp… again
Apparently, this never gets tired. Prepare to revisit Richard O’Brien’s cult classic (fancy dress optional, although it’s actually you who’ll look weird if you just go in jeans and a sweater) for a huge dose of camp, schlocky fun, and the option to sing along and get the words right for once, as the lyrics will be on the screen.
