Walking for health

Ever feel like it’d be nice to get out and about more often? Get a little more fresh air in your lungs? Be a bit more active? Lots of us wish we did more exercise – we know it’s good for us, and we know our health’s important. But what if the gym’s not for you? Easy – just start walking!

The beauty of walking is that it’s really easy to get started, you don’t need any special equipment – and best of all, of course, it counts towards your recommended amount of physical activity. A regular brisk walk improves the performance of your heart, lungs and circulation, and can also lower your blood pressure. It can therefore reduce your risk of strokes, as well as the UK’s biggest killer – heart disease. Even if you’re not ready to walk at a brisk pace, you can take your time and build up slowly. Walking at any pace will help you to manage your weight, reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of some cancers. Not only that, walking can improve the flexibility and strength of your joints, muscles and bones, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. But it isn’t just about keeping your body and your mind healthy – it can be great for your social life too. Walking as part of a group is a great way to start and keep going. You’ll make friends, encourage each other, develop a network of supportive fellow walkers and discover new walks in and around your area. For many walkers, sharing stories, having a laugh and making friends is just as important as feeling healthy and getting into shape.

A little encouragement can go a long way, so why not get motivated by joining the Vivacity Walking for Health Scheme? For more information on local walks in your area call 07920 160792 or email . Find out more or register your interest at www.vivacitypeterborough.com/walkingforhealth

More walk leaders wanted!
We are looking to grow the scheme so we can have walks across the city, and as a walk leader, you can help people in your community to get active and healthy, providing vital support that they otherwise might not get. As well as ensuring walks are friendly, safe and well run, walk leaders are ambassadors for walking and the Walking for Health Scheme, showing people that walking really can make a big difference to their lives. If you would like to help lead and assist sessions, contact Sarah Leadbetter on 07920 160792 or email
