Start with you

Show yourself some love, says therapist and life coach Susie Munns

The power and benefits of self-compassion and self-care are, in my opinion, hugely underestimated. By starting with yourself you will be able to grow and shine, and you will be better able to take care of the people you love. Although guilty of trying to rock this look myself, last time I checked, burnt out and frazzled is not a good look for anyone. When you give yourself a break and are accepting of yourself, the driving force is love.

Love is far more energising than fear, which is the driving force of self-criticism and judgment. Give yourself permission to recharge and take time for you. Your commitments will still be there when you are done, you will just be better equipped to deal with them. For one day, I want you to try treating yourself in the same way you would treat a friend. What would you say to a friend that felt bad about themselves or was struggling? I bet it is far kinder than what you say to yourself? In every situation where you are hard on yourself, I want you to stop, take a breath and switch to ‘friend mode’. Be your very own best friend for the day. ]

If you find yourself slipping, interrupt your negative thoughts with a big loud ‘I APPROVE OF MYSELF’. Notice how you feel at the end of the day versus a day spent criticising and judging. If you like it, carry on; it only takes 21 days to learn a new habit, why not make yours self-compassion?
