Last-Chance For Bulbs
Bulbs of spring flowerers such as daffodils and tulips have been in garden centres since late summer. The earlier you plant these bulbs the better, but if you haven’t got round to it yet don’t worry, there’s still time – just
Select the plumpest, firmest packs of bulbs you can, as these will be the most likely to thrive. Reject any bulbs that are soft, have signs of mould or are damaged.
Bulbs can be planted in a border, in pots or inapatchoflawn.Asa rule of thumb they need to be planted at two to three times their depth, though tulips need to be set one bulb’s depth deeper than this. Use a bulb planter to make life easier and for accuracy.
It may seem obvious but make sure the bulbs are pointing upwards when you plant them, filing back the soil carefully to prevent them being knocked over. Freshly planted areas can be protected from squirrels with chicken wire, but remove this immediately the shoots poke through. Get the bulbs in asap though!
