…everyone. But I think all young people can be inspired by our champions, whether they aim to take their swimming further, or just want to get into the water and enjoy themselves with confidence. And once they’re doing that, who knows? It’s fantastic exercise, and it instils a great sense of discipline, too – so it’s healthy for the body and the mind.’

Many of the skills developed in swimming classes are also transferable – which means they can improve a child’s abilities in a whole host of other areas. Better breathing, co-ordination and all-round fitness are good for just about any sport, but can also be beneficial for music, dance and drama. It’s also social – and the sense of achievement when each individual goal is reached is a huge confidence boost.

Whichever way you look at it, it’s a win-win situation for the city’s young swimmers – and with classes starting at the age of five months, it’s not too soon to start thinking about the 2020 Olympics…
