Dementia Awareness Day

Did you know there are over 100 different types of dementia and that nearly 700,000 people in England alone are living with the disease?

Peterborough City Council’s Adult Social Care team is hosting a Dementia Awareness Day on Wednesday 16 January 2013 from 10am to 1pm at The Fleet, Fleet Way, Old Fletton, Peterborough.

The event will give a real insight into exactly what dementia is, how it progresses and how best to support people suffering with the disease. Expert speakers will talk about how carers can be supported in dealing with difficult or challenging behaviours and explore the various services available in Peterborough.

Councillor Wayne Fitzgerald, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care for Peterborough City Council, said:

This event is an excellent opportunity for carers to come together to share their experiences with others who may be experiencing similar issues. Supporting people with dementia is a priority for the council. We want to develop and invest in the services available to people with dementia so that we can ensure we are able to provide the very best support to anyone living with or caring for someone with the disease. We are currently drafting a new dementia strategy and this event will also give carers the opportunity to give their views about how services can support them in their caring role. It also provides an insight into what is happening in the world of dementia and forms part of our efforts to bring dementia to the fore in Peterborough

Hedda Lilley, Carers Commissioning Project Manager for Peterborough City Council, said:

All carers are welcome to attend the event as well as anyone who has an interest in dementia care and support. During the day, staff will be on hand to look after a loved one to ensure that everyone can get the most out of the event. Should carers require this service, please state so when booking on to the day

Refreshments will be available during the morning of the event and lunch will be provided once the workshops are over.
