The Black Horse

THE PLACE
The Black Horse is in the picturesque village of Elton, just three miles from the outskirts of Peterborough. Set against the stunning backdrop of rolling parkland leading down to the river
Nene, and right next door to the fifteenth century church of All Saints (the garden offers a view of the church) the pub is an idyllic location for functions and celebrations (wedding, anyone?) – or just a quiet pint and some great home cooked food. Recently completely refurbished, it offers an extensive menu of the best of British cuisine in a relaxed and comfortable setting. In addition to fine wines, cask ales and spirits, afternoon tea and coffee are available with a selection of homemade cakes. The refurbishment programme has also expanded the available facilities to include the Poacher’s Den function room.

THE MENU
‘Wherever possible our food is sourced locally and varies according to season,‘ says landlord Herbie Rose. ‘We’ve got a new menu for the summer, now on our website.’ Herbie’s current favourites from the menu include Cider Braised Pork Belly, Champ Potatoes, Green Beans and Cider Sauce or the Cod Loin with a Pear & Ginger Beurre Blanc, Caper Crushed New Potatoes & Seasonal Vegetables. For pud, we like the sound of the Snickers Cheesecake with Chocolate Sauce!

EVENTS
‘On Sundays we have live music from 5pm in the garden,’ says Herbie. ‘We’ve got all new furniture out there now, and all the planting has been done, so it’s lovely and green.’ Recent highlights include a 16-piece ukelele band. ‘We also have a private room for parties and corporate events. It can seat about 36 people who can have full à la carte restaurant service, but also we use it for corporate events.’ It’s completely private, too, with everything separate from the rest of the pub, its own toilets and full A/V services including LCD projector, video screens, flip charts and WIFI connectivity.

EXTRAS
Can’t decide whether to head to the pub or go for a picnic? Now you can have both. ‘We’re doing hampers which you can buy to picnic on the lawn. They have all you need for the perfect picnic – blankets and everything.’ Prices start at £20 per head (£10 for children). Various tastes are catered for, but the one that caught our eye was the Seafood Hamper (from £32 per head) which can include dressed crab, smoked mackerel, king prawn, shelled prawn, cockles, crusty bread and
butter, poached salmon, mixed salad, potato salad, lemon and lime sorbet and champagne truffles. You can pick up a leaflet from the pub for full details. (NB 24 hours notice is required for hamper orders.)

WHAT’S NEW?
‘The new thing that we’re doing is Italian Night on Sundays from 5pm until 8pm,’ says Herbie. ‘We’re doing a selection of three different toppings on pizzas – all home made on the premises by our trained chef, with freshly made dough – and then we do carbonara and a spaghetti bolognese. It’s going down a storm. Just like Mama used to make!’
