Peterborough Music Festival

Shirley Hallam, Peterborough Music Festival committee member and organiser, reveals what we can expect from this year’s performances between 14-18 March 2017 at the Key Theatre

‘The Music Festival has been running as an annual event since 1925, so it’s part of the city’s heritage. It’s a sort of a competition, in which children take part singing or playing instruments in graded classes, are listened to by an adjudicator, and then are evaluated on their performance. It’s quite a tough challenge for young people, but aims to be a supportive environment. Taking part in that event improves performance and confidence so it’s an important part of their musical development and particularly their performance skills. Not all will go on to be professional musicians by any means, but it instils in them an enjoyment of music, and an understanding of different styles of music.

The 2017 competition moves to the Key Theatre for the first time with the whole Music Festival taking place there. Also returning to the 2017 programme is the New Youth Music Showcase – a collaboration with the Peterborough Music Hub. The Showcase is for young songwriters perform their new contemporary pieces. Cash prizes, recording sessions and future performance opportunities are included within the prizes.
