Hitting all the right notes: The Sixteen return to Peterborough Cathedral

In February 2017, the internationally acclaimed sacred choral group The Sixteen make a welcome return to Peterborough Cathedral

With its own period instrument orchestra, The Sixteen’s performance of Bach’s Magnificat  – in the glorious Gothic interior of Peterborough Cathedral – promises to be a feast for the senses. Featured artists include sopranos Katy Hill, Alexandra Kidgell and Charlotte Mobbs, alto Daniel Collins, tenors Jeremy Budd and Mark Dobell and bass Eamonn Dougan.

Written in Leipzig for the 1723 Christmas Vespers, Bach’s Magnificat is the first major liturgical composition on a Latin text by the composer and is a musical setting of the biblical canticle Magnificat. The splendour and jubilation of Bach’s Magnificat anticipates the great choruses of his later work, Mass in B minor, and is one of Bach’s most popular vocal works.

The programme also features Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 3, a collection of six instrumental works which are widely regarded as some of the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque era. Completing the programme is a selection of Cantatas including Singet dem Herrn, Gloria in excelsis Deo, Sinfonia from Cantata BWV 156, Jesus bleibet meine Freude and Sinfonia from part 2 of Cantata BWV 75.

Saturday, 4 February, 7.30pm, Peterborough Cathedral
