ACT is back!

After successfully running classes for 10-18-year-olds from 2010 to 2017 across Peterborough before taking a short hiatus, the local theatre company has returned, relocating to its new home at The Knights Chamber, Peterborough Cathedral

Ross Willett, owner and the lead coach for ACT, explains why the two-year break was necessary for the growth of the business: ‘ACT has always been about offering affordable, but professional classes for the Peterborough community, but what I really wanted to do was to take a step back and create something unique to us.’

This has taken on the form of a 12 month workshop split into four different stages that allows members to join at any time. The course is unique to them, but creates weekly scenarios in which members can get involved in drama-related performances and tasks whilst working on key elements like self confidence, team building, communication, self esteem, but above all else, having fun. ’We want people to feel welcome, relaxed, but above all else that they are just as equal and important as every other member.’ Ross was also inspired by one of his best friends, who runs Inspired Martial Arts. ‘Their process of grading encourages individuals to grow and develop through the stages and this was something I felt could really thrive in a drama environment.

So, every three months, instead of going up a belt, members will take part in unique performances such as murder mystery nights in local establishments, or embrace the growth in technology and live stream performances on Facebook. It’s a really exciting time!’ Classes are currently every Tuesday for 7-11-year-olds and over 18s but there are plans in the near future to re-introduce the 12-17 bracket, as well as opening up classes on multiple nights. As well as drama classes, Ross is hoping to begin reaching out to local schools in the hope of creating more theatre related workshops to help kids with education. Additionally, there is a key focus on adults in theatre as well and the team have recently launched a monthly theatrical open mic night at SAMM’s in the city centre. It’s shaping up to be a fun and theatrical year for ACT Peterborough, so get involved!
