Rarely-seen Peterborough Museum Garden to throw open its gates

Peterborough Museum Garden will be open for National Gardening Week, Tuesday, 14 to Sunday, 19 April

Peterborough Museum is full of fascinating stories, having been a familiar part of the cityscape for several hundred years. But despite being a public attraction for over 80 years, there are still significant parts of it that the public rarely get to see.

Nestled around the back of the main museum building is the Museum Garden. It tells the story of medicine through time from the Tudors, through the Victorian times, and including the Dig For Victory campaign in World War II. Used mostly by school groups, the public rarely gets a glimpse of it – until now…

From Tuesday, 14 to Sunday, 19 April, everyone is encouraged to visit Peterborough Museum’s garden during National Gardening Week, a campaign spearheaded by The Royal Horticultural Society. It encourages the nation to visit their local public gardens or, perhaps if their fingers are particularly green, volunteer and keep those gardens looking marvellous. Peterborough’s Museum is completely free to enter, and the Garden will be open whenever the Museum is, so you really have no excuse not to come along and visit!

Carol Law, Heritage Education and Learning Officer at Vivacity, is particularly excited about opening the Garden to the public: ‘The Garden is a hidden gem at the Museum and the different time periods represented reflect the history of this fascinating building. The original Georgian house would have had gardens which stretched down to the river! They’re a lot smaller now, but a lot of work has gone into the Garden in recent years and National Gardening Week is the perfect opportunity to show what has been done.’

As well as being open for a leisurely stroll throughout the week, some of the Museum’s lovely volunteers will be tending to the Garden on Saturday, 18 April and will be happy to answer any questions concerning the Garden, its history, and what work is being done in there.

National Gardening Week ends on Sunday, 19 April so make sure you come by and see the Garden before then! The opening hours of Peterborough Museum are 10am-5pm Tuesday-Sunday (last admissions 4.30pm). There’s no need to book tickets, just drop in on the day.
