Look out for a blaze of colour at the Cathedral this autumn

The evenings draw in, but colour and light, with a dash of wonderful music and fascinating history, are the order of the day at Peterborough Cathedral.

Look out for a blaze of Autumn colour in the New Building at the east end of the Cathedral at the end of October, when the beautiful fan faulted space is filled with flowers. The Celebration of Flowers exhibition will display traditional and contemporary flower arrangements by Peterborough Floral Decoration Society and the neighbouring clubs at Bourne, Brampton, Stamford, Werrington and Yaxley. It is on show from Saturday 29th until Monday 31st October and entry is by timed ticket.

Janusz Jersey Opera HouseA great way to enjoy the exhibition may be to combine it with the recital to be given by the renowned pianist, Janusz Piotrowicz, on the Saturday evening (29th). Janusz has been described
as ‘a master poet of the piano’ and the audience on his previous visit to the Cathedral were ‘spellbound and transfixed the moment his fingers touched the keys’. A ticket to this concert includes access to the floral displays during the interval.

If classical music is your thing, you won’t want to miss The Sixteen performing Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell on Saturday 22nd October. Alongside this emotional work are three pieces by poet and lutenist Thomas Campion, Herbert Howells’ Take him, earth for cherishing and a new work by award winning composter Cecilia McDowall.

The SixteenNovember definitely begins to look towards Christmas, with the Christmas Craft and Gift Market taking place on Friday 18th November (1.00pm to 9.00pm) and Saturday 19th November (10.00am to 4.00pm). With more stalls than ever this year, this is a great way to explore the Cathedral at the same time as choosing some unique, local or handmade gifts for your loved ones.

Spectacular colours will light up the west front at the end of November when the artists of Luxmuralis bring their sound and light show The Beginning to the Cathedral. Each evening from 23rd to 26th November the exterior and the interior of the Cathedral will be transformed by light. The show promises to be a stunning experience for all the family at the start of our journey towards Christmas. This is an art installation inspired by the Nativity story, using projected light and sound. It is perfectly timed to coincide with the start of Advent. Visitors who saw the Luxmuralis show The Angels are Coming at the Cathedral last year described it as ‘a truly memorable and mesmerising event’ and ‘breathtakingly beautiful and unforgettable’. This is definitely one for the diary.

Finally, for history enthusiasts, there are two fascinating online talks in the programme. On 20th October tour guide, Mark Short, will focus on Peterborough’s 19th Century Gothic Revival. Then on 17th November the Cathedral Archaeologist, Jackie Hall who is interviewed on page 16, will talk about Peterborough Abbey before 1116.
