…called Louis Smith). After the final countdown the trio press the plunger, fireworks light up the sky from the roof of Queensgate, and the new Christmas illuminations light up the streets.

There’s street theatre, St Peter’s Choir (14 Dec), chestnut sellers, a hamper giveaway in the main market, carols by the tree (21 Dec), the huge Coca Cola Christmas truck packed with freebies (14 Dec) – and the list goes on. ‘Some of the smaller entertainments come very late in the process,’ says Justin. ‘Essentially, we’re booking new things in all the time, so there are always some surprises.’

To discover those surprises, you’ll just have to join the party. And isn’t that what makes Christmas such fun – not just the big presents, but those extra, unexpected goodies?
