Final chance to comment on city centre vision

Residents have another chance to comment on a plan that will shape Peterborough city centre up until 2026. 
It includes new plans for the proposed North Westgate retail and leisure development, as well as the redevelopment of the Riverside Opportunity Area and the Station Quarter

The plan sets out the city council’s vision and objectives including the development of an additional 4,300 homes to significantly increase the number of people who live in the city centre.

Councillor Marco Cereste, Leader of Peterborough City Council, said: ‘Peterborough is continuing to grow and investment has already been made to start a number of city centre projects. In recent months, the Peterborough District Hospital site has been sold and there are plans for a new Waitrose supermarket alongside our own plans to redevelop Bourges Boulevard and Long Causeway.

‘We are also working with developers to increase the number of homes in the city centre with projects underway including Midland Road and the 300-home Vista Carbon Challenge project next to the Peterborough United Football Ground.

‘We are a growing and successful city and this will continue to attract investment. This is an exciting vision for the future that will benefit all of our residents.’

All growth plans have to be approved by government before they can be adopted. Following the consultation, the plan and all comments received will be submitted to government who will appoint an independent planning inspector to carry out a public examination.

It’s expected that following this review the plan will be adopted by the end of the year.

The consultation will run between Friday, 24 January and Thursday, 6 March 2014.

Copies of the City Centre Plan, supporting evidence documents and copies of the comments form will also be available at all local libraries.

The first round of consultation for the City Centre Plan was held last year. Those comments were then used to develop this final version of the plan, which was subsequently approved by Cabinet and Full Council.

The City Centre Plan, known formally as the Peterborough City Centre Development Plan Document (DPD), sits alongside the adopted Peterborough Core Strategy which is the overall plan for the city’s growth until 2026.
