City Market’s first ever Christmas Fayre

Peterborough City Market will be transferred into a winter wonderland for its first ever Christmas Fayre on Friday (November 23).

There will be live music, children’s rides, and a visit from Santa himself to the festive event on Cattle Market Road in the city centre.

Councillor Chris Ash, Peterborough Mayor, will turn on the Christmas Tree lights at 5pm. There will also be a special mystery unveiling of a new permanent fixture at the market at 3pm by Councillor John Fox, Deputy Mayor, created in conjunction with Street Arts Hire.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy a special selfie Grotto featuring stylised images of the city, while food traders will be creating special Christmas taster menus.

New stalls for the day include vintage items from The Nostalgia Lounge, artwork and designs by Martyn Hanks and Chris Lane, numerous crafts stalls, and mead from The Iceni Meadery.

The annual festive raffle will also be launched on Saturday 24 November, with all customers able to enter the prize draw to win a Christmas Hamper filled with festive items from market traders.

Steve Woolley,  markets and commercial trading officer, said: “This is the first Christmas Fayre we have held here and we’re looking forward to bringing the festive spirit to the City Market on a major scale. As well as our regular stall holders, who will all have some great items ideal for Christmas, there are some exciting pop up stalls selling festive items as perfect gifts.

“We have been working hard behind the scenes to make this an event that people will enjoy and start Christmas at the market in fine style.”

Councillor Steve Allen, Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet Member for Recreation, said: “Our City Market is a fantastic place to pick up a wide range of bespoke presents and items for Christmas from local traders. If you’re looking for a truly individual gift for someone and a personal shopping experience, I recommend you to come down and look around.”

Doors open at the market at 9am, the event will start at around midday and will run until early evening.

The market is also holding a free trial in mid-December and January, where new traders can take a free stall and potentially save up to £600.
