++ STOP PRESS ++ Careers Festival 2015 venue change

Don’t miss your opportunity to be part of the East of England’s largest skills and careers event, taking place on Peterborough Embankment on Thursday, 9 July

New venue for the East of England’s biggest skills and careers event

Following on from yesterday’s announcement from The Willow Festival that the 2015 music event has been postponed, Opportunity Peterborough’s Skills Service team is delighted to announce that an alternative venue has been secured to ensure that the Careers Festival can still go ahead.

The Careers Festival will now take place at The Peterborough School on the same date of Mission Possible Week – Thursday 9th July from 9:30am to 3:00pm. Students at the school break up for the summer holidays before this date, allowing both the indoor and outdoor facilities to be used to re-create a Festival atmosphere.

The event will go ahead as planned, with exhibitors in both marquees and the sports hall, music and entertainment all day, over 100 employer stands, a CV bootcamp and programme of career-related seminars. Amber Gell, a Rocket Scientist working for NASA, is supporting the whole week of activities and will be meeting students at the Careers Festival in a mobile planetarium.

The 2015 Careers Festival is part of Mission Possible Week, a week of activities being organised by The Skills Service to raise the aspirations of young people and showcase the wide range of career opportunities on offer, both locally and beyond. The Skills Service is a global award-winning team within Opportunity Peterborough, which acts as a brokerage between businesses and schools to help address skills gaps and prepare young people for the world of work.

Mission Possible Week kicks off on 6 July with a conference for teachers and careers advisers, designed to inspire and educate about the wide variety of careers in STEM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths – in order to pass this knowledge onto their students. Research suggests that not enough is being done to encourage young people into STEM careers, despite enthusiasm for the subjects, and this event aims to address that issue. Amber Gell, a NASA Rocket Scientist and Winner of the 2013 Women in Space Award, is supporting the whole week of activities. Amber is the keynote speaker at the conference before spending two days visiting schools in Peterborough, Rutland, Fenland and West Norfolk who are taking part in a STEM Challenge. Winners of the challenge, and other lucky visitors, will have the opportunity to meet and talk to her at the Careers Festival.

Sue Addison, Skills Lead for The Skills Service, said: ‘I was fortunate to meet Amber at a conference and awards ceremony in Brussels and she was very enthusiastic about the work we do to help inspire young people about their careers. I was equally inspired by her passion and achievements and am delighted that she has offered to support our Mission Possible Week. I really think it will be out of this world!’

The Careers Festival is an annual event on Peterborough Embankment. Now in its third year, the festival gets bigger and better each year with over 130 exhibitors and 2,500 visitors in 2014. Aimed primarily at 14-24-year-olds wanting to find out more about career options, you can expect to find out about college courses, apprenticeships and universities, plus meet large and small employers from a diverse range of sectors. So much more than your average jobs fair, the Careers Festival takes place on the site of the Willow Festival, using the infrastructure, large festival marquees and outside space for exhibitors. The space allows exhibitors to bring along interactive activities, which will allow you to try out different skills and get a feel for what it is like to work in their industry.

Employers will also be available to talk on a one-to-one basis about the types of jobs you could aspire to. The CV Bootcamp is the place to go for guidance on CV writing from HR and recruitment professionals, who will also be able to carry out mock interviews and give valuable tips on how to secure your perfect job or place on a course. The aim is for the experience to be fun with a festival atmosphere, so there will also be live music and dance acts on the main stage throughout the day and on-site food concessions. Schools from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Fenland, Rutland, West Norfolk and the surrounding areas have been invited and many schools have already booked to bring groups of students along. For those of you who will already have finished school by July, the Careers Festival is free to attend and there’s no need to book, just come along any time between 9:30am and 3:00pm. Be part of this unique opportunity to be inspired about your career.
