An environmental crisis – a message to Peterborough!

A personal appeal by Soul Happy founder Kim Coley

A serious message about our Earth to our city!… This ain’t pretty, but we all deserve the truth right? I just hope you can handle the reality of it.

You don’t have to be an eco expert of environmental specialist to see or hear there is a serious climate crisis going on across the globe and how it effects each and every one of us. Yes that’s right, even people that don’t lift their heads from their mobile devices and TV addicts may have heard that our natural planet is having problems and severely out of balance. Problems that actually threaten human existence and will soon be too late to reverse.

I have been learning about problems and imbalances of our planet since primary school, but what has actually been done about the over pollution, soil depletion, deforestation, acidy of the oceans, plastics in the oceans over farming livestock for unnecessary meat and dairy consumption, global warming, floods, draughts, forest fires, extinction of natural wildlife … and the rest? The majority have been blindly contributing to these problems.

Cue David Attenborough’s dignified words of wisdom in programs like Blue Planet… Hats off to those who have been building momentum with the Veganuary movement to reducing environmental and animal suffering. All hail the school kids (Youth Strike 4 Climate) striking their Fridays off school in cities to show they mean business (and special thanks to the 15 year old climate activist Greta Thunberg). And, most recently, we have had passionate nonviolent warriors Extinction Rebellion taking over the streets of London to also shake things up a bit. People are making more of a stand.

“Adults keep saying we owe it to the young people to give them hope. But I don’t want your hope, I don’t want you to be hopeful, I want you to panic! I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act, I want you to act as if you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house is on fire. Because it is.” – Greta Thunberg

Are we finally waking up? Are we finally mobilising and uniting? We need change on an epic scale that is currently far beyond our paradigm to change. Will it be enough? What lengths do people have to go to help people understand the credible science and create more real change to stop us creating our own mass extinction?

I know I cannot personally ignore this problem any more. I am paying for this magazine page out of my own money to talk to the masses of greater Peterborough – I am working to filter in sustainability and good values to those that we empower through Soul Happy Wellbeing Centre and Shop. We are committing to zero waste targets and visions to be even more sustainable and inspiring others to do the same. We are getting our tribe, communities and customers to do green pledges too. We are working with other Sustainability groups to raise awareness and much much more.

Why? Well it’s not because I want to be some weird extreme vegan hippie, but I will do all this and more because I care. I care about my city! I care about humans (especially the ones trying to do more good). I care about the animals (especially the voiceless and those that cannot defend themselves). I care about our natural world and planet the most, the place in which all of this exists… It’s the only planet and real home we have.
