A record-breaking year for Peterborough Libraries’ summer reading challenge!

A record-breaking number of children enjoyed a spine-tingling summer by taking part in the Peterborough Libraries’ Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge.

2,000 children across the city participated in the 2013 programme, with 1,200 finishers by the closing date – an increase of 20% on the previous year. Kids took part in the Summer Reading Challenge by joining adventurers as they explored the Creepy House, and by reading books of their own choice from their local library.

The Summer Reading Challenge was open to children of all ages, and it aimed to encourage them to read six books during the summer holidays in order to improve their reading skills and confidence.

Feedback was fantastic, and parents reported children enjoying the challenge, reading throughout the summer and even going up several stages in their reading ability when they returned to school.

“We’re absolutely delighted that so many children took part in our summer reading challenge this year,” says Peter Aldridge, Events and Programme Officer for Vivacity Libraries. “The Challenge is very important to us as it encourages children to keep reading through the school summer holidays and also helps them to see it as a fun activity!”

Children received stickers and rewards along the way, and Peterborough schools presented certificates at assemblies in the autumn term.
