Women Leaders Awards

The launch of this year’s Women Leaders Awards celebrates the inspiring women who help to make Peterborough’s many businesses, charities and community groups happen

The Women Leaders Awards is an event to celebrate the hard work and achievements of women living or working in the Peterborough area. The awards were established by Jan Flawn, founder of neurological care provider PJ Care, to recognise the many women who contribute their time, energy and hard-work to their local communities. The awards don’t just celebrate women who been successful in their career, with categories such as Community Impact and Public Service. They also celebrate young entrepreneurs and emerging leaders – the future women leaders of Peterborough. The aim of this annual event is to offer the same feeling of empowerment and recognition experienced at the national HSBC sponsored Forward Ladies Awards.

Special event
The awards night is very special indeed, with particularly inspiring after-dinner speakers and an incredibly lively atmosphere. Last year welcomed Dany Cotton, the first female Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade, who began her career as the only female in the fire service. This year funds raised from the awards will be donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance, an organisation that does an excellent job at serving the local community. There are many inspirational and dedicated women who do a lot of work within the community. And there are women who have shone in their careers or business but do other work in the community. Women are great at showing excellent leadership in all areas of work and life, and the Women Leaders Awards celebrate just that.
Endless possibilities

Gail Thomas helped launch The Business Café, a network of high street coffee shops for business people, and is a judge on the Women Leaders Awards The Women Leaders Awards is not attempting to promote women for women’s sake. It is giving women the confidence from an early age to be equal in their own right, to think about the possibilities they may have. The awards are also about networking, and raising the profile of what women are achieving. There are amazing things being achieved by amazing teams of people, which are often led by women. But the whole economic drive isn’t just supported by people in business, it is also supported by the success of communities, the success of sharing and giving and enabling – and that can happen in a multitude of ways. These awards recognise all of that, so it’s all-encompassing
