Revitalising Fletton Quays  

Proposals to regenerate Peterborough’s Fletton Quays will create a new vibrant riverside community of residential, office, hotel and leisure uses. Two days of public consultation on the plans revealed positive feedback for the development, with many welcoming the upgrade of this derelict area of Peterborough  

High quality apartments, offices, bars, and a hotel are proposed for a riverside build on a derelict part of Peterborough’s South Bank. The £120 million Fletton Quays development is being brought forward by the Peterborough Investment Partnership (PIP) on 6.4 hectares of prime riverfront development land on the River Nene. Two well-attended days of public consultation on the proposals were held at the Peterborough Key Theatre, directly opposite the Fletton Quays site, this summer, with visitors giving their views on the plans which would revitalise this area of the city.

The feedback will be fully reviewed and collated ahead of the planning application in late September. However, initial comments received included: ‘we really welcome this development and look forward to seeing it take shape’ and ‘there is a real need for family-friendly spaces to walk to that are clean, inviting and safe’. In recent years, many central locations in Peterborough have been given a new lease of life including the overhaul of Cathedral Square, work to Long Causeway, a £43m investment into the train station and Bourges Boulevard. These ventures paired with a wave of new eateries and shops are transforming not only the appearance of Peterborough, but attitudes towards it.

The riverside build of Fletton Quays will provide a new community for Peterborough’s expanding population, and provides a mix of high class city centre apartments, quality office accommodation and a much-needed central hotel. The project provides an excellent environment for future residents with frequent and reliable transport links in the local train and bus station, both of which are no more than a 15 minute walk away. The redevelopment of the South Bank is sure to cement Peterborough’s status as one of the UK’s fastest growing cities.

The 6.4 hectare development will include 265 apartments, restaurants and a wildlife area. The intention of the build is to support the city’s thriving, diverse population, and the vibrant new spaces created by the development will be aided by the inclusion of new cycle and pedestrian links as well as the creation of new jobs due to the site’s mix of office, retail and leisure accommodation. The plans also include the refurbishment of the existing listed rail buildings and their incorporation into the scheme, providing a link to the heritage of the site whilst also looking to meet the community’s present and future needs.

The planned 160 bed hotel – boasting views across the river towards the cathedral – promises to benefit Peterborough’s tourist industry as well as visiting businessmen and women, with its central location making it ideal for those who wish to explore the city whilst remaining within walking distance of its most celebrated amenities. Pram Nayak, Joint Managing Partner of Peterborough Investment Partnership said, ‘The development of Fletton Quays is key to the overall strategy for improving and revitalising Peterborough. We hope that people will be supportive of these plans to provide a much needed improvement in this area.’

Although the development proposes modern, economically and environmentally sound low-carbon homes, the site remains in touch with its history and culture. Standing adjacent to the famous Peterborough United Football Club ABAX Stadium and just a stone’s throw away from the Key Theatre in its leafy surroundings, there is something for everyone in this exciting new space.
