The Rothwell Charnel Chapel

Mon 20th March 2017 7:30 pm

From the early 13th century, crypts were constructed throughout England to house disturbed skeletons from associated graveyards and provide a location for pilgrims and locals to pray for the dead, amongst the dead. The subterranean charnel chapel of Holy Trinity Church in Rothwell, Northamptonshire houses one of only two remaining in situ medieval ossuaries in England. It offered archaeologists from Sheffield University a rare opportunity. Led by Dr Jenny Crangle and colleagues, a multidisciplinary, community-led archaeological investigation now aims to gain insights from the site.
