Apethorpe Hall: Investigation and Repair

Mon 13th March 2017 7:30 pm

Following the compulsory purchase of Apethorpe Hall (or Palace as it is now known) in 2004 and its allocation to English Heritage a team of archaeologists, architectural historians and historians was assembled to investigate its history and architectural development whilst it was undergoing phased repair. This gave the team a unique opportunity to study the surviving fabric in detail and to combine this with documentary research into the building’s history and also that of its various owners. This talk will illustrate some of the discoveries made and give a brief outline of the methods employed and the conclusions reached about the history of this fascinating country house which retains significant architectural fabric from the late 15th century onwards. A member of the team assembled by English Heritage, Peter Smith was involved in the historical investigation of Apethorpe. Join us to hear his first-hand account.
