Off with her head
Ever wondered what it would be like to go back in time and meet a famous figure from history? Well, Burghley House can’t quite offer that, but they can provide the next best thing: an audience with acclaimed actress and historian Lesley Smith, who will be appearing as the late, ill-fated monarch, in full costume.

Here be dragons
All for charity – the extremely worthwhile Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall hospice – this event is about the ancient Chinese sport of dragon boat racing. The Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival is open to everyone and up to 52 crews are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course, watched by several thousand spectators.

Can you dig it?
A fantastic event for anyone interested in the art of uncovering the past, featuring two of the country’s best-known and most popular archaeologists: Time Team’s Phil Harding and Francis Pryor. The two experts will reveal how Time Team began, discuss programmes filmed in the area and reveal secrets from behind the scenes. Includes audience Q&A.

Charge!
Real, proper, actual jousting, in a town centre, which hasn’t been done for 500 years! Admittedly that’s probably because it’s not very practical, but this year the Heritage Festival people have said ‘practical be damned!’ and lo! Jousting outside the magnificent Cathedral there shall be! Expect cheering, thundering hooves – and lots and lots of splinters.
