Rising costs for lessons, tests, insurance and of owning and running a car mean that more and more teenagers are putting off getting behind the wheel. But now, enterprising Peterborough company Marmalade has designed a scheme to help get this generation of motorists started. It believes every young person should have the chance to learn to drive – and, when they do, they should be ensured of the safest possible start. The Moment catches up with Crispin Moger, entrepreneurial MD of Marmalade, to find out more

MD Crispin Moger explains: ‘We champion young drivers. We’ve all been a learner who’s gone on to pass our test, then got behind the wheel and set off alone on our first solo journey. We can all relate to those mixed feelings of excitement and freedom, nervousness and anxiety.’ Putting itself in the shoes of the young motorist, Marmalade has pioneered insurance products specifically designed to help drivers aged 17-24 get on the road. It was one of the pioneers of telematics, the black box device that helps control and improve driver performance, earning it national and international recognition and a royal safety award.

The Storeys Bar Road company has now gone a step further, combining crucial elements of safety with a financial package that provides an affordable way forward for young drivers. The insurance provider has struck a deal with suppliers to package a brand new car together with 12 months free insurance and up to 20 free driving lessons. Young drivers across the Peterborough region are among the first in the UK to be offered the Fuel & Go package, believed to be the country’s only car and free insurance package that starts at the age of 17.

‘Times are difficult, and some young people are delaying driving lessons altogether,’ says Crispin. ‘Others who pass are buying up old bangers because that’s all they can afford and that’s a worry to us.
