Plant Some Tomatoes

Here at The Moment Magazine we are all about celebrating the joy of the tomato – a quintessential summer crop that produces plenty of shiny, taste-packed fruits. Whether you heeded our advice and have grown some plants from seed or are only just thinking about popping out to the garden centre to buy a few ready-grown specimens, May is the month to plant them

Growbags (short for ‘growing bags’) are the easiest way to grow tomatoes, providing ideal root conditions and proving very easy to look after over the summer months. You can place your bags in a sunny spot on the patio or simply line the perimeter of a greenhouse with them. Once the season is over and it’s time to grub up the plants for the compost bin, the contents of the growbag can be emptied out onto borders or refreshed with a little organic fertiliser to use to grow a winter crop of salad leaves.

Don’t scrimp on the growbags you buy – select only well-filled bags that will offer better support for your tomatoes. Seek out peat- free growbags (peat extraction is environmentally and ecologically disastrous). Quality growbags will never be the cheapest but are worth the investment, which will be repaid in delicious tomatoes!
