How To Start Tomatoes Off

Sow seeds very thinly and evenly across the surface of pots containing good quality seed compost. Place each seed individually, leaving at least 2cm between seeds.

Cover the surface with a thin (0.5cm) layer of sieved compost or vermiculite. Water the pots by standing them in trays of water. Remove once you see moisture at the surface.

Now place your pots into a propagator to speed germination. If you don’t have a propagator cover the pot with a clear polythene bag secured in place with a rubber band.

When the seedlings appear and are large enough to handle they can be pricked out into their own 7cm pots. Use multipurpose compost and make sure you handle them with care.
