Friends of Norman Cross – Peterborough Heritage On The World Stage

norman-cross-sketch

Here is advance news of our most ambitious project yet . . . apart from restoring the eagle memorial that is!

We are planning a weekend trip to Portsmouth from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd April 2012

Planning is in the preliminary stages, but we would travel down on the Friday afternoon and book into a hotel for the weekend. On Saturday we will visit Portsmouth Dockyard, to see HMS Victory and the Royal Naval Museum. The evening would be spent perhaps in Old Portsmouth where we would have dinner. On the Sunday morning we will have a guided tour of Portchester Castle by Paul Chamberlain, giving us an insight into another of the large prisons in use during the Napoleonic Wars, that was part of the system that included Norman Cross prison depot.

Portchester Castle is a fascinating place to wander around, with a history that goes back to the Roman period. After lunch we will then travel home. It promises to be an enjoyable and interesting weekend, but to make it viable we need a minimum of 35 people. The estimated cost will be about £160.

Tel: 01733 245189  or email derek.lopez@normancrossgallery.com  if you would like to become a member. Membership fee is £10, running April to April and those joining now, will have a reduction to £6.00 until the new membership starts.

All those interested in registering for the April Portsmouth trip must contact me as soon as possible due to limited places being available.

Preliminary programme for 2012:

  • February – Possible talk on the Time Team archaeological series.
  • May – AGM and talk on the Norman Cross prison story.
  • July – Heritage Weekend, Peterborough.
  • September – Heritage Open Day at the Norman Cross Gallery.
  • End September/early October – Possible day trip to Edinburgh Castle to look at the Napoleonic prison there.
  • November – Members’ visit to the Norman Cross Gallery, Peterborough Museum.

Many Thanks
