GP referral scheme to tackle ‘obese Britain’

Public Health England (PHE) – the body responsible for advising local authorities on how to improve the nation’s health – shows 64% of adults in England have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or over, classing them as overweight

A GP referral scheme has been set up in Peterborough which aims to help anyone in the city living with a range of conditions including obesity, diabetes and hypertension as well as injury rehabilitation arthritis, asthma, osteoporosis and stress related illnesses.

GP referral schemes can help improve quality of life for anyone over 16 years of age living with any of these conditions. This offers expert advice, specialist support and a friendly environment where you can meet other people living with a similar condition.

With nearly two-thirds of adults in England classed as overweight or obese, action is taking place to support those who need help and advice on obesity, diabetes, arthritis and many other leading symptoms of excessive weight gain.

People who are overweight or obese increase the chance of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers, while the NHS continues under constant strain due to many preventable illnesses. At present, health problems associated with being overweight or obese account for over £5 billion each year.
