The seventies had 3D glasses, the eighties; the TomyTronic 3D gaming device. The nineties bore witness to the 3D craze that was Magic Eye and, last year, we saw the first ever-live 3D TV broadcast. Now Sony has taken things a step further with the launch of its 3D Personal Viewer, the HMZ-T1.
The Head Mounted Display is a truly immersive experience offering High Definition 2D and 3D viewing
It looks like something out of Star Trek, slipping over your face like a futuristic fighter pilot’s HUD and furnishing your gawping eyes with a representation of a 750-inch 3D cinema screen. Built-in headphones provide a 5.1 surround-sound effect and it connects to Sony-branded Blu-ray players or a PlayStation 3 gaming consoles.
And this is where Sony will find its first buyers – the niche gaming market. Not only is 3D appropriate for high-octane, fast-paced, immersive games but, unlike watching movies, gaming is a solitary affair, so no-one will see how silly you look (even if we think they’re uber-cool).
Twin OLED screens deliver a high contrast image and the intimacy of your own personal cinema
Each of the two internal 0.7-inch OLED screens can be adjusted to suit your eyes, which Sony claims will give viewers a clearer image and a more comfortable experience for longer periods of time.
While some may sneer at the sheer ridiculousness of such a gadget, we say hats off to Sony for having the bottle to produce such a device. Many tech manufacturers are hell-bent on replicating Apple products, so it’s good to know that some are continuing to research and develop their own technologies, which will ultimately spark imagination and creativity for future products.
Sony hasn’t announced a UK release date or pricing, but we hope to see this crazy-looking contraption in time for Christmas. Everyone looks a little bit silly, then…
