Disrupted Sleep Patterns Increase Risk of Diabetes and Obesity

An article published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, has shown that researchers discovered that when exposed to prolonged sleep restriction – alongside disruptions to their circadian patterns – people experienced a decrease in their resting metabolic rate and an increase in their plasma glucose concentrations after a meal. This was caused by their bodies not being able to secrete enough pancreatic insulin. They concluded that for people who experience these kinds of conditions e.g shift workers, this pattern of disrupted sleep could increase the risk of diabetes and obesity.
