Peterborough Gilbert & Sullivan Players will delight G&S lovers with a new presentation of this eternal favourite at The Key Theatre
The Yeomen of the Guard arose from the nostalgia surrounding Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and the re-opening after restoration of the Tower of London. The Yeomen, the personal bodyguard of the monarch, have been much in evidence during Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. It is appropriate that The Players, who last performed this in her Golden Jubilee year, have chosen it again.
The grandeur of the Tower is a fitting setting for this colourful operetta set in Elizabethan times and regarded by Gilbert and Sullivan as the best thing they had done. There is some stunning choral and solo music to accompany a story full of romance and intrigue which is touchingly human and funny yet with a cruel and dark streak to it.
Colonel Fairfax is falsely accused and under sentence of death. His accuser stands to inherit his fortune unless, with the help of The Lieutenant of The Tower, he can arrange to thwart him. Meanwhile Sergeant Meryll, whose life has been saved in battle by Fairfax, devises a risky plot to free him. When Meryll’s daughter Phoebe, the head jailer Shadbolt and two strolling players, Jack Point and Elsie Maynard, get caught up in these machinations they little realise the twists that will lead to a denouement which is both joyful and tragic in full measure.
