Get ready to enjoy the first Peterborough River Festival!

Peterborough will be awash with fun for the family at the city’s first River Festival this weekend.

The Peterborough River Festival will run Friday, 19 till Sunday, 21 June to celebrate the River Nene, with market stalls, street food, a beer festival and bar, live music and funfair to entertain all the family.

Water-based activities will include flotillas of cruisers from local boat clubs, a fleet of visiting narrow boats and on board demonstrations. The festival will mark the important contribution the River Nene has made to Peterborough’s history and heritage.

A market featuring over 40 art, craft, accessory, vintage and grocery stalls will keep children and families busy, whilst street food vendors will serve cuisines as diverse as Mexican to Moroccan. Those over 18, will be able to enjoy 24 different local and national ales at the bar and beer festival, with summer tipples and sangria on offer to those that don’t drink ale.

A live music and entertainment stage will feature one of the UK’s most up and coming bands, Coco & the Butterfields, as well as local acts and community groups.

Demonstrations include classic farm machinery, shire horses, bee keeping and cheese making, as well as traditional arts and crafts. A funfair will include traditional and the latest thrill seeking rides as well as a few novelties, including a super-sized dragon slide.

Annette Joyce, service director city services and communications, said: “We already have a fantastic range of events and activities on offer in Peterborough and the new River Festival is an excellent addition to this summer’s line-up.

“Most of events, activities and demonstrations are free of charge, making it an easy way to entertain the family over what is hopefully a great summer weekend.

“The Embankment is a fantastic space to host these events, with plenty of parking nearby and easy access from the city centre.

“If you’re looking for activities to keep your children entertained this summer check our website and the Visitor Information Centre on Bridge Street to see what’s on across Peterborough.”

Paul Kennedy, events director at Market Square Group, said: “We can’t wait to bring this festival to Peterborough and showcase the beautiful and natural attraction of the Peterborough riverside.”
