Bongo drums… good for your health?

Making music can be fun and rewarding, but did you know that it can also help to tackle complex issues like stress and high blood pressure?

A new range of workshops from Peterborough based social enterprise, Monkey Bongo, are designed to help people de-stress, brush off feelings of anxiety and enjoy themselves.

Harnessing the power of informal, ‘in the moment’ music, the drum circle workshops are being run by Darren Goodale who founded Monkey Bongo eight years ago.

‘Each of the new workshops has been specifically designed to work with different groups of people,’ explains Darren.

‘Our schools workshop is tailor-made for students and explores creativity and rhythm. We run a specialist workshop for people working through depression and other mental health issues. Drumming circles also make for unique corporate events bringing teams together, and can be really good fun as entertainment at parties, or as relaxation for seniors.

‘Making music serves as cognitive exercise, keeping your brain fit. It’s a great way to bring people together, have fun, get creative, burn some calories, and relieve feelings of stress.’

A typical workshop will include a warm-up where participants get used to the hand drums and learn about basic rhythms. Each session is guided by an expert facilitator to bring out the best in people in a relaxed environment.

Darren has delivered workshops at festivals and community events as well as for businesses and the NHS. Group bookings require a minimum of eight participants and a maximum of 50, prices start from £75.

Darren is coming to Yaxley with a public drum circle at Saint B’s Hall, Main Street (PE7 3LS) every first Thursday of the month, and at the Green Backyard, Oundle Road, Peterborough (PE2 8AT). Both workshops are 7.30 – 9 pm, prices £7.00. All welcome, all drums supplied – or bring your own!
