CityFibre (www.cityfibre.com) has completed the installation of four dedicated, pure fibre network connections in Peterborough that will bring gigabit speeds to one of the UK’s largest e-Gaming events, CityLAN (www.citylan.co.uk/live) this August.

Held at the ABAX Stadium and Future Business Centre, CityLAN will attract 20,000 visitors as well as organisations such as the European Gaming League (EGL). Key gaming figures such as UbiSoft Lead Game Designer Tim Browne, who is heavily involved in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, will also be involved; Browne will be delivering a keynote address via video link from France.

Along with thousands of gaming demos, live-play sessions and high profile exhibits, all reliant on a strong network connection, live gaming sessions, streamed speaker slots and demonstrations will be live-streamed to a big screen in Cathedral Square in Peterborough city centre and around the world.

There will also be a strong focus on careers in technology, with an active push to engage with students and younger people. Local organisation Digital People in Peterborough (DPiP) will be using hardware from robotics firm Arduino to teach visitors how to build a robot as part of this section of the event. There will be further talks and Q&As on computing, app design and development and wearable technology. Both parties have worked in close partnership and consultation to ensure the network is able to support all the demands of running an event that is amongst the most data hungry in the world. An experienced team of engineers will closely monitor the connections throughout the event.

CityFibre’s network connections, part of its recently completed 90km fibre network project called the Peterborough CORE, will become a permanent fixture at both sites which host numerous businesses and events, and are home to Peterborough Football club throughout the year.

Commenting on the delivery of the connection, Andrew Starnes, City Development Manager at CityFibre said: “Providing gigabit connectivity for CityLAN’s inaugural games is a further testament to the work CityFibre is doing to make Peterborough one of the best digitally connected cities in the world.

“The Peterborough CORE network was completed in 11 months is currently being used by over 140 local business as well as over 100 public sector sites, including 70 schools. We are proud to be able to supply a world-class digital solution to an event as big as CityLAN and are looking forward to demonstrating the network’s ability to handle the huge amounts of traffic the event will generate – ensuring it’s a true Gigabit Gaming spectacular”.

Terry Harris, Director at CityLAN added: “Bringing an event of this size to Peterborough shows that it is a hotbed of digital innovation. We are expecting thousands of visitors as well as hundreds of exhibitors and gamers to descend on the venue over three days so having a robust, reliable gigabit network was essential.

“Having CityFibre as a partner is something we are most thankful for – as many gamers know exceptional Internet and ultra-low latency is a must and with so many people in attendance a robust connection is one of the most important ingredient to CityLANs success. We’re confident all our attendees – from gamers to those watching keynote addresses from overseas – will enjoy a high quality experience throughout.”

Other attendees at the event will include gaming accessory provider, Astro Games, renowned Peterborough e-Gamer Ash Dubh who has close to 500,000 YouTube subscribers and Dr Mata Haggis, Professor of Creative and Entertainment Games at Breda University of Applies Sciences in The Netherlands.
